Suitcases, Baggage & Other SynonymsSomething exciting is happening at Theatre Works in St Kilda. The venue that premiered the incredible musical Flowerchildren in 2012 has another hit on its hands with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Suitcases, Baggage & Other Synonyms.

A two-part musical comedy, that’s all singing, all dancing entertainment features the talented vocals of the five-strong cast and their flawless harmonies. Led by Barnaby Reiter, this exceptional pianist is much more than an accompanist, but rather, a major selling point of the story.

Joined on stage by his four housemates; The Singing Waitress (Hannah Daniel), Jazz Musician (Casey Dolcetta), Comedienne (Sarah Jackson) and Actress/Hag (Melissa Kahraman), Reiter leads the way underscoring the action.

As the five friends try to decide on an appropriate holiday destination, the audience is treated to a plethora of incredible original music by the cast. Each vocalist was utterly brilliant and they all had the chance to show off their abilities throughout the performance.

In what could be more accurately described as a series of skits, the cast play up to the many stereotypes that surround those working in the theatre industry. From working menial jobs and waiting for their “big break,” to falling in love with their (gay) housemate, Suitcases, Baggage and Other Synonyms is a camp production with plenty of laughs.

The constant breaks from the action to allow the singers their moment to shine was both a highlight and a hindrance to the performance, as the stunning score left the audience wanting more, and yet made the story less cohesive.

A confusing phone call to the travel agent was a brilliant and hilarious display from both Daniel and Jackson with their comedic prowess evident in their delivery.

Each performer was outstanding, and there is not a weak link amongst them. Dolcetta’s vocals were simply incredible as was Daniel’s turn as the foreign pizza deliveryman whose input into the show may have been more than initially thought.

Suitcases, Baggage and Other Synonyms is more fun than a holiday in Barbados, (or Afghanistan) and will keep you giggling throughout the performance.

It is an absolute delight to see brand new theatre from a group of talented performers, and I look forward to the bright and shiny future that is sure to meet the cast and crew of Suitcases, Baggage and Other Synonyms.
