Great fun! An Unwasted Evening takes it's name from Lehrer's album An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer but this show is anything but a waste of time. It has it all humour, brilliant music making, singing, interesting historical perspectives and drinking songs!

Dr Antony Hubmayer (performing as Dr H) led us on a scintillating journey through the witty compositions penned by Tom Lehrer. Dapper in a three piece suit with his hair sleeked back into a natty "man bun" he briefly introduced Lehrer to the audience.

Lehrer was a child prodigy who began piano tuition at the age of 7, he entered Harvard University at the age of 15 and graduated from University with a degree in mathematics. He began composing satirical numbers to amuse his friends, so the topics he wrote about were social and political concerns of the day. The development of rockets and space exploration were hot topics and led to an ode to former Nazi German/American aerospace engineer Wernhner von Braun.

Dr H then bounced into matters sexual with the song Oedipus Rex and the clever I Got It From Agnes. The latter never actually revealing what he got from Agnes and indeed all the other male and female recipients mentioned in the song. Dr H is an excellent pianist and attacked the satirical numbers with relish.

The delicious Poisoning Pigeons in the Park was followed by the fabulously irreverent Vatican Rag, given an extra sting by referencing Cardinal Pell! Cleverly he inveigled the audience into cheering and waving their arms every time there was a key change in the music, and there were lots of them!

We sang along with the chorus of We'll All Go Together When We Go, surely the ultimate funerary dirge.

Hubmayer is a music educator and performer and his passion for the songs of Lehrer is palpable and infectious.
