Williams is a huge presence. At 6 foot 5 inches he dominates the stage. He is a popular radio and television artist in New Zealand, but I was pleasantly surprised to see a turn out of about 70 crowd enthusiastically into the tiny Oasis Comedy Club for this the first of his stand up shows.
He traded on his height and the closeness of the front row of patrons, "Are you actually on the stage?" He then stepped down to demonstrate the 4 inch difference between the two.
It was a 60 minute ramble of seemingly unrelated stream of ideas and topics. The audience however was very receptive to his content, roaming, as it did to thoughts on Jesus Christ, the All Blacks rugby team, views on "trans" identities before moving onto Oz politics. After some impressions of Peter Dutton, he moved on to a few memories of his childhood.
His father we were told ran a McDonald's and as a teenager he was expected to work shifts there in the Summer holidays. At that stage he was only 6 foot 4 inches in height so the uniform became a crop top with 3/4 length pants!
Williams is not shy with words and his language was liberally laced with colourful adjectives. In an interesting aside he mentioned newspaper coverage of a group of Australian neo Nazis, seen in chilly Melbourne wearing shorts!
In a clever turn to close the show, Williams pulled out his mobile and regaled the crowd with listings from the Buy, Sell, Swap column on Facebook. The final listing was a cracker, mentioning the urgent reason for the sale!
